About the event

This UI/UX Designathon is a part of the Calgary Maker Faire, which is hosted by Roots 2 STEM to promote STEM education in Calgary. Roots 2 STEM is an outreach program for Capstone Engineering Academy which is a non-profit accredited school supporting the Alberta community with STEM education programs. The Calgary Maker Faire will be at the Red and White Club in Calgary: 1833 Crowchild Trail NW, Calgary, AB T2M 4S7

About the challenge

This challenge is intended for undergraduate students in the greater Calgary area, but students of all ages from across Canada are welcome to compete virtually! Participants may compete in groups of 1 - 4 people. Students in Calgary are highly encouraged to attend Maker Faire in person.

Schedule (all times in MDT)

May 3nd, 6 PM: Challenge Reveal

Competitors will be sent a Zoom link to view the challenge reveal virtually, after which they may begin researching and designing!

May 5th, 10 AM: Project Submissions

All submissions must be submitted on DevPost by this time.

May 5th, 10 AM - 12 PM: Project Pitches

Teams will pitch their projects to the judges and the Maker Faire community virtually or in person (competitors in Calgary are highly encouraged to attend in person to enjoy the event).

May 5th, 2 PM: Awards Ceremony

Winning teams will be announced virtually and in person.

Requirements

What to Build

After the challenge reveal on May 3nd, you will be sent a challenge package with the challenge briefing, as well as a link to schedule your project pitch on May 5th.

What to Submit

  • Low/medium-fidelity prototype (visual design not included) of 1 flow (~3-5 screens). Include a link to your prototype with your DevPost submission (preferably Figma, but other platforms are accepted).
  • 1 high fidelity screen to demonstrate the visual design (Incorporate this screen anywhere into your prototype)

Judging Criteria

  • Visual Design
    - Are the visual components used in a thoughtful, consistent, and aesthetically pleasing way? - How well does the visual design contribute to the overall user experience?
  • Prototype
    - Is the project easy to use and intuitive? - How well does the information architecture aid in easy navigation?
  • Project Pitch
    - Was the presentation well-organized and did it follow a logical sequence? - Was the idea communicated clearly and effectively? - Did the pitch explain how and why key design decisions were made? (Can involve user research)
